The Salt Box to open Surrey’s First Woodland Cookery School and Dining Venue

Feast beneath the trees in Nutfield with the award-winning The Salt Box

The award-winning The Salt Box will be opening Surrey’s first Woodland Cookery School this Spring on the Priory Farm estate in Nutfield, just outside of Redhill.

Founded in Autumn 2017, Christian and Beckie from The Salt Box have been curating pop-up feasts over fire and cookery workshops in and around Surrey and the south east of England. To date, they’ve welcomed over 2500 people around their shared dining tables, from woodland breakfasts to pop-up suppers at local vineyards, breweries and sculpture gardens.

“The Salt Box is a celebration of locally sourced, seasonal food and open-fire cookery through the coming together of people beneath the trees, creating delicious food from nature’s humble ingredients.” says co-founder Beckie Wingrove, who started the business with her partner Christian 18 months ago.

The duo focus on cooking with what the land provides, moving with the bounty of the seasons. Root to fruit and nose to tail – that is the foundation upon which they craft their menus. “Mother nature had this all sorted long before we came along. Seasonal ingredients are fresher, haven’t had to travel far, and keep our money in the local economy. To us, it’s a no-brainer.” says co-founder Christian Armstrong.

The Salt Box’s new Woodland venue will host courses teaching small groups how to cook over open fire, taking children and adults alike on a journey to discover the immersive world of the great outdoors and encouraging a life in meaningful contact with nature.

And it’s not just about learning to cook a delicious meal. Exposure to the great outdoors has great potential to be a protective factor for the mental health of our young people and adults, something the founder feel very strongly about. All their events and courses will encourage the coming together of people in a natural environment through a shared love of food, ever-more important with friendship becoming a lost art in our increasingly time-poor, high tech world.

“Like so many small businesses, up until now we have been running the business from our garden shed! We’re incredibly excited to be putting down roots and begin the next phase for The Salt Box” says Beckie. “We have been on the look out for a suitable woodland site for the past year, and our new home on Priory Farm is absolutely stunning”.

The Salt Box will provide an even wider range of events and cookery courses, including foraging walks, wild game butchery and afternoon tea in the trees. They will also be collaborating with a variety of local businesses including Surrey Art School, offering woodland art workshops combined with a feast beneath the trees.

Today, The Salt Box are launching a Crowdfunding campaign to help financially support the launch of the Woodland Cookery School. A wide variety of rewards are available to purchase, from tickets to their inaugural Afternoon Tea in the Trees to an intimate woodland supper just for two.

Supporting Local

The team have always been driven by supporting local farmers, growers, artisans, craftsmen and businesses. There is an undeniable power in the collective, which is why they have collaborated with over forty local businesses since day one.

At the core of The Salt Box is a loyal customer base, which is a testament to Surrey’s growing community of locavores – which in turn contributed to The Salt Box winning Surrey Life’s Newcomer of the Year award in September 2018. In December 2018, they were also awarded the Surrey Hills Trademark.
