7. St Michael’s Church
The Grade 1 listed St Michael’s Church, in the small village of Betchworth, dates from the 12th century, with the north windows being of Norman ancestry. There is, however, also evidence of an earlier Saxon church on the site, with a stone fragment found forming part of the pillar of the tower’s south window.
Glimpsed through the beautiful engraved stone archway of the eastern churchyard entrance, this is the archetypal English village scene. It’s no surprise that the church featured as the setting for the first wedding in the classic British film, ‘Four Weddings and a Funeral’ (1994), written by Richard Curtis and starring Hugh Grant and Andie MacDowell.
A stone’s throw from the church, the old timber-framed Betchworth Forge provides another historic photo opportunity.
