Norbury Park

Along the Mole Gap Trail…

A working landscape and Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI).

The trail now skirts the eastern edge of Norbury Park. In 1931 Surrey County Council bought 530 hectares of the park to protect it from development. The purchase was spearheaded by the then Chairman of the Council, James Chuter Ede, who later served as Home Secretary under Clement Attlee. He held this position longer than any other Home Secretary in the 20th Century. His swift action in securing the public ownership of Norbury Park has enabled it to be enjoyed by ramblers ever since.
