Rethinking the way we shop
Here at the Cupboard we are rethinking how you do your weekly grocery shop and bringing you back to your high street. We do the refusing for you by working with our suppliers to reduce the packaging that comes with our food and daily essentials.
We have cupboards serving the villages of Ashstead and Fetcham, where we give the entire community the resources to make more sustainable choices. We stock many locally grown, made and produced items to reduce the carbon footprint of our products. We regularly meet with new businesses to build Surrey based partnerships and expand our local offer. We re-purpose old containers where we can but we encourage all our customers to reuse what they have.
Bring your own container to fill up with the likes of rice, sugar and coffee, or bring your kitchen cleaner spray bottle and refill it again and again! Some of our products come in returnable containers which we send back for cleaning and reuse. Where the packaging cannot be reused, it is returned to suppliers or managed by our green waste management company for recycling. If you take any packaging home with you, it is likely you can return it to us for reuse, recycle it or it will home compost and rot away. We really are trying to avoid bringing products into the shop that have a single use but some items we have yet to find a suitable alternative to.
We specialise in providing a range of products to suit a plant-based lifestyle. All of our products are suitable for Vegetarians but the majority are Vegan friendly too.

The story behind Fetcham from the Cupboard
Fetchem from the Cupboard launched in July 2018 by Tracey in answer to her own search to buy her food with less single use packaging. After only a few months of planning, researching initial suppliers and making local connections, trading began and the community support encouraging her from the beginning, which lead to the second Cupboard in Ashstead being opening in March 2019.
Tracey has been on a personal journey to become more sustainable since 2017 when the reality that there actually is no ‘away’ hit her. The supermarkets and main food stores all had single use packaged foods, and the healthy options were wrapped up more than once. It is the hope to eliminate single use packaging from her own life completely and build lessons learned into the business, helping the community she serves to implement changes in their own lives too.
Our connection with the Surrey Hills
We have built working partnerships with many small local businesses, both retailing their offer and encouraging other local businesses such as cafe’s, restaurants and other suitable shops to stock their products. We continue to build new connections and support start ups within Surrey to test the market for their products. The aim will be to introduce a Surrey based supplier for most of our offer, alongside our staples, and build sustainability to our business and that of the Surrey Hills economy. Surrey has so many innovators and makers, and it is a pleasure to be able to work with these inspirational entrepreneurs and build a network for our communities to access. Protecting the environment for future generations is our ultimate goal and we want to build a sustainable community with strong local values. I will actively work to raise awareness of the ethical and sustainable businesses with our county, and encourage others to join the Surrey Hills community; together we can do so much more. We need to put pressure on the Local Government organisations to support businesses working more sustainably and build a library of information to share with others for lessons learned to be adopted in other organisations.
