Birtley Estate

At Birtley Estate, the well maintained 48 acres of grounds and woodland, provide a variety of local sustainable produce which is proudly home grown.

Cider Brandy

Cider Brandy is distilled from over 600 apple trees located in Birtley Estates very own cider apple orchard. As well as the Kitchen Garden and Orchard providing produce which is incorporated both into the Birtley House Nursing Home menus and used to make a range of preserves and chutneys which can be purchased at Birtley House reception.

Honey and bees

We are fortunate to have the Guildford Bee Keepers and their hives located on site and they generate a valuable yield of Birtley House honey each year (available to purchase at reception). Charcoal is also available to purchase on site which is made out of wood from the Birtley Estate woodland using traditional methods. You can also try your hand at fishing on the lake where there is an abundance of trout.

Woodland community of artisans

The woodland is actively managed with a small community of local artisans from in and around Surrey presenting a range of skills and activities for both adults and children. These activities include stone carving, yoga, sacred drumming, traditional wood-working, pyrography, arts and crafts and much more. What is so wonderful though is the offerings for children to develop outdoor skills, such as traditional bush craft, tool carving, tree climbing, den building to mention just a few. SHAC – Surrey Hills Enterprises Adventure Company – run activities in open water swimming, raft building, mountain biking and even ‘Supping’ AKA Stand up Paddle boarding, SUP in particular is very popular, and you will find Sunday morning sessions running throughout June on the Birtley Estate. It is well worth checking out for both adults and children – and with the long summer holidays looming it’s a great way to get kids outdoors and learning new skills.

An area which is being developed is an outdoor Forest School and this should be open in late summer.

Spend a day wandering the Surrey Hills Sculpture Garden which is held in the grounds of Birtley House during May. The exhibition showcases both local up and coming sculptors, along with those who are nationally renowned.

We use local suppliers wherever possible and are keen to support innovation and independence in the community.

Our family run business has been in Birtley for over 80 years and the community, the environment and biodiversity are integral parts of our ethos and plans.
