Festival of Sport

The team at the Surrey Hills Challenge is making the event even bigger this year with the *NEW* Surrey Hills Festival of Sport. Set in the beautiful vineyards of Denbies Wine Estate in Dorking on Sunday 23rd September, the Festival is a FREE to attend event celebrating the Surrey Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB), a fantastic area for outdoor activities, sport and exercise.

Through participation and the demonstration of all the different types of activities people can get involved with, the Festival will showcase just how great and versatile the Surrey Hills are, from walking and running, horse riding and cycling to orienteering and archery, woodland skills and climbing. As well as showing how accessible the Hills are for everyone, the Festival is open from 09:00 to 19:30 with the main activities taking place between 10:00 and 16:00.

Among those joining the Festival are the British Horse Society and their mechanical horse, Riding for the Disabled (RDA) with their carriage demonstration team and Surrey Hills Equestrian Working Group with two ponies who will demonstrate gate opening, amongst other skills.

Surrey Outdoor Learning & Development will be sharing their passion for taking young people and adults out of their usual surroundings into the outdoors with their mobile climbing wall and woodland skills activities which includes fire lighting and woodland crafts.

Surrey Striders will demonstrate the art of Nordic Walking; Mole Valley Orienteering will have a special introductory family orienteering activity and Run Surrey Hills will be on hand to enthuse wanna-be runners on the joys of trail running. Cycling trials, a hill climb, an assault course and a 10k or 5k walk or run are also available for those feeling more energetic.

Dogfit are experts in canicross and have all the kit and expertise on hand; Aussie Grit Apparel will be promoting their range of trail running and trail bike kit and Shere Trek Hire has a range of good quality running and trekking equipment for visitors to browse and try on.

Children can participate in The One, a 1km fun run or walk, enjoy an inflatable activity centre, arts and crafts, glitter tattoos and face painting. The Surrey Hills Society will also be bringing puppets from the Tales of the Tillingbourne project, a dressing-up station, storytelling and an art competition.

Denbies will be offering hot and cold food at the Festival of Sport alongside its two eateries, the Gallery Restaurant, located on the third floor overlooking the 265-acre vineyard, and the Conservatory Restaurant, which offers the perfect al-fresco dining experience with breakfast, light lunches, hot lunches, cream teas and a children’s menu.

Visitors can also pop into Denbies Wine & Gift Shop which not only sells the vineyards wine but has a fantastic range of gifts, stationery and collections of home interior accessories. Also on site is the Village Green Farm shop selling a wide range of fresh local produce and groceries with a selection of seasonal vegetables grown in a Victorian walled garden on the Denbies Estate.

The Festival has been developed to sit alongside the successful Surrey Hills Challenge, a walking and running event offering six different events from 60k to 1k on the Greensand Way.

All six challenges will finish at the Festival, helping create a fantastic atmosphere. Denbies will be the focal point for the Surrey Hills Challenge as every competitor and their supporters converge to celebrate and relax after completing their challenge.

Both events are organised to raise awareness and funds for the Surrey Hills Trust Fund. The Community Foundation established the Surrey Hills Trust Fund to exclusively help local projects and community groups within the Surrey Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB). Those raising funds by participating in the Surrey Hills Challenge will enable the Trust Fund to help local projects conserving the AONB and support the people who live, work and enjoy the area.
