Guildford Town Bridge Guildford
Exploring Compton and the North Downs Way
Sunday 3rd January 2016
Guildford Town Bridge at 11am
Come and enjoy a winter walk, explore part of the long distance walking route known as the North Downs Way. Meet us at the town bridge in Guildford at 11am for a prompt set off along the Wey Navigation. Leaving the river at St Catherine’s, we will pass by the ancient ruins of St Catherine’s Chapel before heading off along the North Downs Way to Compton.
Compton is the thriving centre of the Victorian Arts and Craft movement. Victorian artists, Fredrick Watts made Compton his home and the Watts Gallery is now a successful regional art gallery. We will also explore Watts Chapel which is an unusual clay tiles and mosaic building in the Arts and Craft style.
Bring money for a drink or lunch after walk but the tour itself is free to both members and non-members and is open to everyone. You can also bring a packed lunch. The event is not suitable for those with mobility issues and is not designed for children. Well behaved dogs on leads are welcome. Please wear stout walking shoes and wrap up warm and comfortable as the walk will take place in any weather.
