DUNSBOROUGH PARK GARDENS
Tuesday 26th April 2016 at 2pm
As announced in our latest newsletter, 2016 is going to be the “Year of the Garden” and we are delighted to invite you to visit the unique gardens of Dunsborough Park – famous for its garden ‘rooms’ and the magnificent, colourful springtime tulips. Baroness Sweerts de Landas Wyborgh is kindly opening her grounds near Ripley and allowing us to enjoy an exclusive private visit to these spectacular gardens. Subject to their busy schedules, the Baron or Baroness will greet us upon arrival and we will then enjoy a guided tour with the Head Gardener or one of the gardening team.
Dunsborough Park in Ripley dates back to the dissolution of the Monasteries. The farmer who took over the land built a farmhouse around a single central brick chimney which has now grown to become Dunsborough House. The gardens were laid out in the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries. The older walled gardens were divided by the main greenhouses into “rooms” for the display of statuary and the central area was lawned as a vista to show off the central Palm House.
All these ‘rooms’ are themed and include the Peacock Gate and a Lutyens path, the Dutch Garden with a cut flower garden, Ginkgo Biloba hedges, fruit and apothecary herbs, the Secret/White Garden (with an ancient mulberry tree, 300 years old and still a prolific fruiter!), The Mediterranean Garden, the Old Rose Garden and the Water Garden surrounding stunning greenhouses.
The guided tour will take approximately 1.5 hours, but we have the exclusive use of the gardens to wander around for an hour or so more. The visit will take place whatever the weather, so in case of rain bring suitable shoes/boots and clothing – or your sunglasses and hat if the sun joins us for the afternoon.
The cost of the visit is £18/member (£20/non-member), which includes entry, coffee/tea and biscuits on arrival and guided tour.
Booking is essential. If you would like to join us, please complete and return the attached slip to arrive at Warren Farm Barns before Tuesday 5th April 2016.
Please include your e-mail address or a stamped addressed envelope so you may be sent full details, directions and locations for the visit.
