Birtley Woodland Art Space – a community arts, crafts and wellbeing outdoor studios delighted to be showcasing 10 talented artist during the month of June as part of the 2021 Surrey Artists Open Studios
Their outdoor studio is one of 162 locations and 286 artists taking part in running open studios across the county and nearby borders, this is a real celebration of artists working across all art forms. Surrey Artists Open Studios is a fantastic opportunity to meet Surrey-based artists and makers, and to find out more about their work.
The artists and makers will demonstrate and exhibit a selection of mixed media, paintings, textiles, mosaics, ceramics, Willow art and craft, handmade jewellery, metal and green woodwork, pyrography, wood art, outdoor furniture design, leather works, sculptures and stained glass.

> Ruth Wheeler – Mixed Media Artist specialising in Wood Carving, Sculpting and Pyrography.
> Lorraine Ellery Matthews – Willow sculptures, decorative art pieces and plant supports.
> Denise Jaques – contemporary shimmering mosaic art for the home and garden.
> Kirsty Furguson – artist and silversmith showcasing her Time and Tide Jewellery collection.
> Caroline Rutter – Leatherwork combined with glass in innovative ways.
> Denise Blackburn – abstract paintings that trap layers of light between the colours.
> George Chapman – traditional and naturally creative blacksmithing and green woodwork.
> Henry Williams – bespoke furniture using the skill of steam bending plus oak doors and windows for listed buildings.
> John Lord – Constructions from found objects used as stencils to incorporate into his drawing processes.
> Creative Response is an arts for wellbeing charity working with individuals who are vulnerable due to physical, mental, learning difficulties and substance misuse problems.

The outdoor studio space is nestled within the woodland beyond the lake on the Birtley Estate in Bramley, a beautiful Surrey Hills location, so picturesque with its lakes and gardens and woodland walks and not surprisingly it is classified as an ”AONB” an area of outstanding natural beauty!”
Release your inner creativity and participate
in an ‘Art In The Woods’ taster workshop on Saturday 5th, 12th or 19th June. You can try your hand at a choice of Willow Art & Craft, Wood Carving or Pyrography, Botanical Cyanotype Printing, Abstract Painting, and Wall Hangings from a textured mosaic.

This community-wide event has many benefits; not only are you supporting artists in the local community but you could also be inspired, learn new skills or have a go at making something yourself. There are many artist led trails to help you plan a day out, some can be walked or cycled, combining culture and being outdoors. Birtley Woodland Art Space is featured in the West Guildford Trail and Lorraine’s work is also featured in the East Trail with Aileen Hamilton – Creative Jewellery Studio & Friends.
Birtley Woodland Art Space is a community arts, crafts and wellbeing outdoor studio managed by fellow Surrey Hills Enterprise members Ruth Wheeler (Yoga Creative/Sculpt It) and Lorraine Ellery Matthews (Hedges & Hurdles Country Skills & Crafts) for people to come together and learn from professional instructors passionate about sharing and passing on their knowledge and skills to others.
You can either pre-register your open studios visitors slot in advance or just turn up on the day and provide your contact details on arrival. Government Covid 19 policies and guidelines at the time of this event will apply.
