The Surrey Hills Wood Fair proved another fantastic success this year. The sun shone on the Birtley Estate in Bramley for the two day event and the show hit record numbers! Over 6500 people attended over the Saturday and Sunday making it the best attended Wood Fair yet!
There was much to keep everyone entertained from Horse and Wagon rides and Archery to Storytelling a Theatre Tent and Live Bands. Over 30 coppice workers showcased their skills and products in the woodland area and the Tree Pirates were back for more daredevil chainsaw carving! Local Produce was in abundance with fantastic offerings from Flapping Jacks, the Fillet & Bean, Tillingbourne Brewery, Silent Pool Gin and more. The Birtley Estate local produce stall was selling an abundance of fresh Surrey produce including fresh bread, autumnal vegetables, cakes and pastries and the Surrey Hills heritage sausage proved very popular selling out fast on both days. There was lots on offer to buy with local wood sculptures and wooden mushrooms proving particularly popular.
Children under 12 were admitted into the event for FREE and there was so much on offer for them, with crafts and activities as well as tree climbing, a zip wire with Bug Hunts and Nature Trails proving particularly popular with both the adults and children! For the first time this year the Birtley Estate lake was used and canoe rides proved very popular. Many visitors bought their four legged friends along who were very welcome.
Simon Whalley, owner of the Birtley Estate comments;
“I’d like to thank everyone who came along to the Surrey Hills Wood Fair. There were more family orientated activities this year and it was great to see young people not only enjoying themselves but gaining an understanding of woodlands and woodland products. We are only the custodians of our countryside so it is vital that the younger generations learn the importance of protecting and supporting it.”
The Wood Fair will be back in 2016 on Saturday 1 & Sunday 2 October and promises to be even bigger and better!
