As the 2015 outdoor season really gets going, the Surrey Hills Society looks forward to a full and exciting events programme for our 800 plus members. The Society is part of the Surrey Hills AONB family who all work very closely together to meet our aim – conservation and preservation of the Surrey Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) for future generations.
The Surrey Hills Society is the charitable arm of the family with a growing member/volunteer group. Our offer to members is a social diary of events throughout the year that will encourage them to discover and help conserve the natural beauty of the area. Members are kept informed with a newsletter delivered to them three times a year, filled with stories about the Surrey Hills, the events we’ve run and those that are planned. You may well see us at an outdoor event near you too as we attend many local shows over the summer months – come and meet us and pick up some inspiration for walking and discovering our fabulously diverse Surrey Hills landscape.
Our events programme this year is even more varied than in previous years and we are quite often running a waiting list or putting a popular event on at another time of year to accommodate demand. This is great news for the Society and shows that we are meeting the needs of our members and hopefully enticing new ones. Events coming up include a guided walk around the Gatton Estate, near Reigate; a private visit to Chinthurst Hill gardens, near Chilworth; a horse-drawn boat trip from Godalming on the River Wey and our ever popular Chairman’s Day in late May which is focussing this year on local wines, beer and spirits producers in the Surrey Hills.
We recently ran our own ‘Surrey Hills Inspiring Views and Impressive Structures’ photo competition open to any budding photographers out there. Our judge had a hard time choosing a winner from the many entries that came in, but these have now been chosen and will be used on a new set of notelets helping to raise funds for our charity.
We’ve got an active 20s to 30s group now, headed up by Pete Lambert, who’s really knowledgeable about the Surrey Hills and always searching out a new trail with a hostelry at the end for the thirsty! He runs monthly walks using social media to publicise these. Follow him @SurreyHillsAONB or email [email protected]
And finally an idea for an unusual birthday present, contact us to buy a membership gift pack. Very good value at £15, this pack gives you and your family membership of the Society for a year, normally priced at £25, and includes a membership card you need to activate plus a set of our notelets and other small gifts inside. Email us at [email protected] or call 07530 949302 if you’d like to buy one.
You don’t have to be a member to come along to most of our events, and we’re happy for people to come along and see if they like what we do, so for more information on anything that the Surrey Hills Society is planning this year, click here to take a look at our events, alternatively visit www.surreyhillssociety.org to find out more about the Society and how you can join.
