The Mills of the Tillingbourne

Scroll Down

The Tillingbourne was one of the most industrialised valleys in 17th Century England. From the time of the Domesday Book in 1086 up until the later 20th Century, it powered some 24 mills and supported at least 12 different industries: corn-milling, gunpowder manufacturing, paper-making, tanning, iron-forging, wire-drawing and more.

Our Tillingbourne Tales Heritage Lottery Funded project delved into the fascinating history of the Tillingbourne Valley and discovered some wonderful stories to help bring to life the important industrial heritage of the area.
