The position of North Downs Way Development Manager is currently being advertised. This post is principally funded by Natural England with the support of Kent and Surrey County Councils, Medway Council, the AONBs of the Surrey Hills and Kent Downs, Visit Kent and Visit Surrey, and the Diocese of Canterbury.
There are exciting times ahead for the North Downs Way and we are looking for someone to lead the way and maximise the opportunities that arise. One of only fifteen National Trails across England and Wales, this is amongst the finest walking routes in the country. Whilst a major part of this role is to maintain and enhance the quality of the Trail, your responsibilities will extend far beyond this. You will maximise the Trail’s tourism potential; identify and implement projects that benefit the wider local economy; enhance visitor’s experience of the wonderful landscapes through which the North Downs Way passes; and engage with users, local businesses and community organisations in promoting and enhancing the Trail.
We expect you to have a sound understanding and experience of rights of way, but it is vital that this is balanced with knowledge of the outdoor leisure sector, landscape management and sustainable rural tourism. Opportunities like this don’t often appear, and we are looking for someone to grasp this opportunity with zeal to expand how the Trail is promoted and used. You will constantly be looking to develop new projects and approaches, attract funding and deliver real on-the-ground improvements. You will work to an agreed Delivery Framework with the opportunity to influence and shape the new North Downs Way Strategy.
Your responsibility will extend for the entire 153 miles of the Trail through both Kent and Surrey, guided by a diverse and supportive Trail Partnership. You will operate from within the Kent Downs AONB Unit (hosted by Kent County Council) with the opportunity to work from various bases in both counties.
The ability to travel across a wide geographical area in a timely and flexible manner at various times of the day is essential.
