HR SPECIALIST BRIAN BRINGS 37 YEARS’ EXPERIENCE TO SMES IN SOUTH SURREY

An HR professional with 37 years of experience has decided to leave corporate life and set up his own business serving SMEs in South Surrey.

Brian Wilson has worked in HR since 1980, in a variety of roles in industries including motors, pharmaceuticals and recruitment.

For the past six years he has worked in Richmond in south west London, getting up at 5.20am every day to travel to work.

But seeking a greater work life balance the 63-year-old has decided to give up the corporate life, along with the commute, and set up in business on his own in offices in the High Street in Guildford.

The HR Dept Guildford, Godalming and Haslemere will provide outsourced HR advice and support to small businesses which have an HR requirement but do not want or need full-time support in-house.

Mr Wilson hopes that with high business confidence in the SME community in the area, the offering of director level support at an affordable price will be something small businesses will find attractive.

And he said he is looking forward to the challenge of running and developing his own business, including the networking and contact-building which will become a daily part of his new working life.

Mr Wilson will be working with his wife Diane, who was born in Surrey and will provide him with administrative, finance and back office support from a home office in Sandhurst, where the couple have lived for the past 25 years.

He said: “I worked as a sole trader for a couple of years back in the early 1980s so this isn’t something I have done for well over 30 years. It’s not going to be easy, it feels a little strange but I’m much more relaxed about it than I was then and I’m enjoy the challenge already.

“Not having the daily commute is a great relief and to be working in a business community in which I’ve lived for more than 25 years is a real treat.

“I think Guildford is going to be a very viable territory because business remains good for most people around here. My key targets are pharmaceutical and recruitment businesses but the principles of good HR apply equally in every sector so I’m looking forward to getting involved with some different types of industries, too.

“It’s nerve-wracking, getting out there and promoting my knowledge and expertise in a way that I’ve hardly ever done before, but I’m determined to make it work and I believe that the model is viable here.”

The HR Dept is a national company based in Bristol which has a network of 61 licensees working in and 82 territories around the UK and Ireland, providing the full breadth of HR services, from recruitment, employee relations and benefits to the admin of the policies and the documents, to SMEs in their areas.

Gemma Tumelty, managing director of The HR Dept, said: “We are delighted to welcome Brian to our growing family of licensees and we are sure she make the most of this excellent opportunity to offer her advice and support to SMEs across Guildford, Godalming and Haselmere.”
