Silent Pool schnapps takes Austria by storm

Silent Pool Distillery from Albury was the upstart that upset a centuries old tradition in Austria last week.

The one year old company created its first range of Eaux de Vie in the magical summer of 2015 when Kent orchards groaned with fruit. Tonnes of pears, quinces, apricots and plums all found themselves being transformed into fabulous aromatic spirits.

And these have just bowled over the judges at the World Best Schnapps Awards run by Destillata in Austria. The quince gained maximum possible marks for flavour, closely followed by the pear – winning both spirits a Gold Medal. The apricot won Bronze.

This amazing result in the heartland of Schnapps production is a huge success for the Silent Pool. Co founder of the distillery, Ian McCulloch, said: “Eaux de vie are more complex spirits to produce and proving that we can create these subtly flavoured spirits and win on the international stage demonstrates the versatility and potential of our distillery.

“We have a great creative team here with distillers Cory Mason and Tom Hutchings and we have built up an impressive portfolio of award winning gin, eaux de vie, vodka and gin cordials in little over a year.”

The Schnapps triumph came hard on the heals of success for Silent Pool Gin with Gold in the World Spirits Awards held in Austria, and Silver in the World Spirits Competition in San Francisco. A second silver will be awarded later this month.

The Silent Pool Distillery is situated just off the A25 at Albury, in Surrey, overlooking the pool itself. It is a magical setting, steeped in myth and legend, haunted by a beautiful maiden who drowned fleeing from the wicked Prince John. Opening hours are weekdays 9am -5pm, Saturdays and Sundays 10am - 4pm.

For gin lovers and those who are plain gin curious, the distillery offers a 90 minute Experience, where Distillers reveal how Silent Pool award winning gin is made, what exactly goes into it and why.
Visitors are taken through the production process, the botanicals, flavours and how they work together to deliver a multi levelled and complex-tasting gin. There will also be the opportunity to taste some of the various stages in production and some of the other spirits being produced. Go to www.silentpooldistillers.com.

Silent Pool gin takes on the world and wins

Silent Pool Gin from Albury was pitted against spirits from all around the world in competitions this spring and has come home triumphant.

The artisan gin won Gold in the World Spirits Awards held in Austria, and Silver in the World Spirits Competition in San Francisco - a huge achievement for the Silent Pool Distillery which has only been up and running for a year.

The Gold was for Best Gin under 45% ABV. Silent Pool distiller team Cory Mason and Tom Hutchings travelled to the Hochstrasser Distillery in Mooskirchen, Austria, last week for the presentation ceremony.

“It is so exciting being part of this fantastic renaissance in artisan distilling,” said Cory. “We are a small company – barely one year old – up against some very experienced players and also some innovative new ones and it is brilliant that Silent Pool Gin has won.

“We want people to sense the essence of the Surrey Hills and the magic of the Silent Pool when they taste our gin. It is what makes our spirits special. It’s great that the judges appreciated that.”

Silent Pool competed against more than 1,700 spirit entrants in the American competition, so winning Silver in the Premium Gin category was a real endorsement of the company ethos – creating spirits hand-crafted from start to finish using a range of botanicals and spring water.

Co founder of the distillery, Ian McCulloch, said the business had taken off really quickly since they began distilling last year. “We have more orders at the moment from Sweden for our navy strength Admiral Collingwood Gin and for Toujours 21 special gin celebrating the 21st anniversary of Eurostar,” he said, “And sales of Silent Pool Gin are going very well, both in the UK and abroad. Winning international prizes is the icing on the cake.”

    Silent Pool’s Eurostar Special

Silent Pool Distillery has created a special gin to celebrate the 21st birthday of international transport provider Eurostar.

Toujours 21 is the result of a creative partnership between business premier culinary director Raymond Blanc OBE and the artisan distillery next to the Silent Pool at Albury. The aim was to evoke Eurostar’s “heritage, reminiscent of both British and French cultures.’”

“When designing the gin, my vision was to take travellers on a journey of taste that played upon all the subtleties of the brand,” explained Blanc.

“The aromatic notes of lavender hint to Eurostar’s latest Provençal destination, while the delicate yet clean taste of the angelica, evoke memories of the British countryside.

“By uniting such robust flavours, the bespoke gin is the perfect way to commemorate the anniversary.”

“It’s been an incredible experience working with Raymond Bland,” commented Cory Mason, Silent Pool master distiller.

“We talked the same language. He was very interested in how we were using flavour and we saw eye to eye. He chose the direction of flavour and we had to create a product that linked England and France – a fusion, a collaboration. We used English lavender and took the exact flavour note that we wanted. We used both the seed and the root of the angelica which gave a delicate floral back note.

“At Silent Pool Distillery, we pride ourselves in hand-making artisanal spirits using local resources and botanicals. With Raymond’s wealth of knowledge and understanding of flavours and ingredients, we were able to create something truly unique.”

Travellers eager to sample Toujours 21 can do so in the Eurostar Business Premier lounges in London, Paris and Brussels, where it will be launched as part of the drinks offering. It will be available to purchase online in the next few weeks.

Silent Pool Distillery wins its first International awards

Silent Pool Gin, hand created in Surrey’s premier artisan distillery, has won its first international awards.

Barely three months after its launch, the aromatic gin has taken on the world at the prestigious International Wine and Spirit Competitions and won Silver for Contemporary Gin, Gold for Gin and Tonic and Silver for Packaging.

Founder of the distillery, Ian McCulloch, was delighted. “We are a small local company and we took on all-comers on an international stage and won awards,” he said, “We believe you can almost taste the beautiful Surrey Hills in our hand-crafted gin. Silent Pool Gin was selected for the maiden voyage of the P & O Flagship even before it went on sale to the public and it is on its way to securing a global market with export interest from South Africa, Denmark, Italy, Sweden, France, the Philippines and Thailand.

The creative spirit behind the gin is Master Distiller Cory Mason, who buzzes with new ideas: Albury Limited Release Alcoholic Cordials are already in production. The strawberry cordial, available locally and at farmer’s markets, tastes beautiful. Peach, rose and cardamo are coming soon.
