A quirky environment, we invite you to step in to the wonderful world of quality wines and deli delights. Selling a selected range of boutique wines including Organic and Biodynamic from all over the world. Can’t decide then let our team help guide you. Our deli is all about aperitif, wonderful cheeses, crackers and other delicious accompaniments, antipasti, cured meats, nibbles, truffle goods and biscuits to satisfy the sweeter tooth.

    We shall be hosting a variety of intimate wine tasting events throughout the year, wine lessons, an evening with a winemaker, pop up restaurants or informal tastings.

    Private Hire

    Our Boutique is available to hire out. We have different areas within the shop that can be adapted to suit requirements. An intimate meeting with some wine and cheese to accompany in a secluded area in the back or up to 70 guests in our Boutique.

    Looking for more of a business meeting space? We have that too. With a large TV for presentations, these can be incorporated in to a tasting event as well if required. We work with all our clients to ensure we create an event that suits you. Please do contact us to discuss the possibilities.

    Cellar Wines Win at Muddy Stilettos Awards 2017!

    Muddy Stilettos Surrey Business Awards were held on Friday 23rd June 2017 at High Clandon Vineyard in East Clandon, Surrey, offering a chance to celebrate Surrey’s finest in local business.  Cellar Wines in Ripley won the Best Wine Merchant 2017, an award which recognises the best Surrey Wine Merchant.

    Summary of the Muddy Stilettos Surrey Awards – Over 8 weeks. Over 65,000 Surrey Businesses. 27 categories. 135 finalists. 15,000 individual voters. 35,000 votes cast.

    All finalists attended the gala celebration with a fantastic buffet along with High Clandon’s very own fabulous Aurora Cuvée, 2011 Sparkling Rose.  They also had the chance to network with other locally celebrated winning businesses.

    Cellar Wines in Ripley offers a carefully selected range of fine wines from around the world, fortified wines, dessert wines, artisanal spirits and craft ales, along with a range of champagnes, fine Havana cigars and a gourmet delicatessen to take out or eat and drink in, as well as holding many events.

    The building itself, on Ripley’s High Street, is steeped in history and even has a prestigious Historical Place of Interest blue plaque outside.  It was the first coaching house in Ripley for the London to Portsmouth route, then became the Ripley Pharmacy as it was known in 1943, owned by pioneering chemist, Kenneth White (who first manufactured and produced penicillin for civilian use during WWII). The boutique has now been fitted out in a quirky and eclectic style including upcycled furniture, wardrobes, dressers and even trunk suitcases.

    Andy Walton, Manager at Cellar Wines, said,

    Cellar Wines regularly plays host to some fabulous events: whether it is a themed wine-tasting evening, a supper club or even a pop-up restaurant for up to 42 seated covers or 60 standing, it’s a great way to expand your wine knowledge in comfortable and relaxed surroundings.  They can also arrange private events or tastings on a bespoke basis, as well as offering the perfect venue hire for special occasions.

    Within the business vision, Cellar Wines aims to embrace the Ripley village community and surrounding area and be in keeping and become part of it.  They recruit locally and provide comprehensive training for new staff.  They also regularly invest time and money back into the local community by helping at events, donating any stock that is still in date but nearing its end of shelf life to local charities and supporting community initiatives and events.  Some of the charities they support include Cherry Trees, Woking & Sam Beare Hospices, Shooting Star Chase and The Rotary Club of Ripley & Send.

    Cellar Wines has made a huge investment in their fully integrated back office systems.  From the website, social media accounts and email marketing, to the iPad EPOS till, accountancy software and data analytics, they have created the building blocks for a multi-site business.  They also have a host of high technology hidden in the boutique, including super high speed internet, high speed cabling and data networking, high speed social Wifi, multimedia platforms for sound and vision, and a large Ultra HD screen.

    Commenting on winning at the Muddy Stilettos business awards, Walton continued,

    “We are over the moon and flabbergasted to have won this award and not long after winning the Eagle Radio awards!  We were up against some very stiff competition and we have our loyal customers and thank you to them, great team of staff, suppliers and partners to thank for believing in us.  The award will allow us access to work with Muddy Stilettos on new campaigns.  We have been given a valuable opportunity to expand our proposition and establish ourselves more firmly as a growing and successful community-based business.” 

    Cellar Wines now has more than 8,000 Twitter followers, over 4,000 Facebook followers, over 1,000 Pinterest followers and more than 1100 Instagram followers. Nearly 2,000 people subscribe to the monthly newsletter and the website and web store has already seen almost 30,000 visitors. Nearly 5,000 transactions have been completed in store since it opened.

    The final accolades to reflect Cellar Wines’ success as a start-up business are a 5-star feedback rating on Facebook, a 4.7-star feedback rating on Google Plus, a 5-star rating from the Food Standards Agency and Cellar Wines is now ranked Number 1 in Ripley on Trip Advisor for ‘Things to Do in Ripley – Wines Bars, Nightlife & Food and Drink’.

    where pharmacist Kenneth White pioneered civilian use penicillin

    Cellar Wines in Ripley played host to a memorable event which unveiled a prestigious, new blue plaque. Ripley Pharmacy on Ripley High Street, a former 15th century coaching inn, was bought by thirty-year-old chemist, Kenneth White, in 1943. It was here that White first made the wonder drug penicillin available to the public. The dispensary has had just four owners in 102 years, until it was bought by Cellar Wines in 2015.

    The Mayor of Guildford, Councillor Gordon Jackson, unveiled the plaque, along with John Hutson, who had worked alongside White since 1944 and who continued to work at the pharmacy for fifty years. The event had a very good turnout, with guests including family members of Donald Green, who also worked with White.

    Cellar Wines, an independent luxury brand provider, offering artisan spirits, boutique wines, a gourmet delicatessen and fantastic events, kindly sponsored the event. Cellar Wines were delighted to lay on a selection of their fine wines, cheeses and canapés from their delicatessen. The blue plaque now had pride of place on the wall outside the wine shop.

    History behind White’s achievements

    Penicillin had been discovered in 1928 by Scottish scientist Alexander Fleming and the production of penicillin became a wartime priority but it was reserved exclusively for the Armed Forces: None was made available to the civilian population. For months, White had wondered what he could do to help the war effort. He followed the discovery of penicillin with interest and, not satisfied with the dictum “no penicillin for civilians,” he resolved to do something about it. White’s additional motivation to manufacture the drug came after he made a bet with a local doctor.

    In a quiet back room of the now Grade II listed building, with its old-fashioned façade, timber frames and picturesque appearance, the ambitious young chemist defied the establishment to bring a medical revolution into the lives of ordinary people. To undertake the manufacture of penicillin, White needed a suitable strain of ‘penicillium notatum’. He evidently did acquire one but how and when he did so remains unknown. In March 1944, White wrote to the Ministry of Supply requesting a ‘pure culture’. In July of the same year, he wrote to the National Collection of Type Cultures with a similar appeal: both requests were rejected. Apparently, an embargo had been placed on this particular culture to prevent scientists from other countries getting hold of it.

    Apparently, White told a newspaper reporter that he had visited a large penicillin manufacturing facility and in all likelihood, he was secretly given a culture during his visit. In April 1944, using culture flasks, an ice-cream refrigerator borrowed from a local tea shop (after food rationing had rendered it redundant) and a great deal of resourcefulness and help from locals, White became the first civilian chemist to manufacture penicillin filtrate.

    An article in The Daily Mirror, 3rd June 1944, reported:

    Youthful, energetic, Mr. White leads a “double existence.” In the day time he supplied the villagers with medicine; far into the night he worked in the dispensary at the rear of his shop to supply hospitals and doctors with free penicillin.

    The early penicillin was not suitable for injecting so White made it into a cream. Perfecting his technique, by September 1946, White had acquired a special license to dispense penicillin injections. Supplies were soon available for local doctors, hospitals, nursing homes, veterinary surgeons and pharmacists.

    Inevitably, the appearance of stories in the press about White’s success with penicillin led to pleas from members of the public, desperate to obtain the powerful antibiotic for friends and relatives. His efforts are believed to have led to the treatment of a few score of patients and all the evidence suggests that he bore all the associated production costs himself and made no charge for the penicillin.

    White’s humanitarian spirit and Herculean efforts were also greeted with admiration by a number of drug houses. In recognition of his achievements, Glaxo Laboratories supplied him with growth medium in tablet form for cultivating penicillin. In February 1945, the Ministry of Supply sent White a coveted culture, a gesture tantamount to their bestowing official approval on his endeavours.

    White was continually attempting to improve his production facilities. White had attempted, without success, to obtain a licence under the terms of the Therapeutic Substances Act, 1925 to conduct research into penicillin. This was withheld during the war and finally granted in July 1948.

    Working almost completely independently and unaffiliated to either a hospital, academic institution or research organisation, White succeeded in producing penicillin for the general public. Learning of the existence of a compound that had the power to alleviate human suffering, he determined to do what he could, with the limited resources available to him, to provide a much-needed antibiotic to as many people as possible. White continued making and supplying penicillin after the war had ended.
