Blackdown Ridge Estate is a relatively new, family run vineyard situated in Haslemere, nestled in the heart of the South Downs National Park. Here we have planted vines to create fine English wines, taking advantage of the superb location and conditions. The grapes planted for our range of still and sparkling wines include aromatic Bacchus, Triomple d’Alsace, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier, Pinot Blanc and Chardonnay. The wines of Blackdown Ridge Estate are the result of passionate wine lover/owner, Professor Martin Cook who has lived on the estate for 21 years – we are producing in the region of 21,000 bottles a year
They have now launched a second vintage of classic cuvee sparkling wine which is superb quality, winning Silver in both the recent International Wines and Spirits Competition and Independent English Wine Awards and also a Bronze award in the UKVA Wine. Their range of still red, white and rose wines have also won recent awards – Decanter Bronze for our Bacchus (apparently the first Bacchus that has ever won a Decanter Award) and IEWA Bronze for their red wine. They hope this demonstrates that while they are a young and relatively small organisation, the wines they are producing are of a high standard and not to be overlooked!
Eosinia – 2014 English Rose
Made from a careful blend of Rondo and Bacchus varieties adapted to the English climate, Eosinia is a bright, light, ruby pink colour, with an aromatic, grassy aroma and hints of fresh strawberries. Crisp acidity on the palate with red berry fruit of redcurrants and strawberries. Medium body with a crisp, refreshing finish.
A great match with any Indian curry or middle eastern cuisine.
Carmine – 2014 English Red
Made from Triomphe grape variety, the wine has been aged in French for 6 months, giving greater depth and complexity. The wine has a bright, midcherry colour, with ripe cherry aromas and hints of spice and roasted red peppers. Firm acidity and medium body on the palate with red fruit character and a delicious, juicy, satisfying finish.
The soft tannin profile makes this a versatile food wine just as suitable with roasted salmon as it is with steak or a Sunday roast.
Chiaro – 2014 Bacchus
Made from the Bacchus grape variety, ideally suited to the cool English climate, Chiaro is light in colour with floral aromas of blossom and elderflower. A fresh crisp acidity, green apple fruit and refreshing finish.
A great food wine, well suited to white fleshed fish, creamy pasta dishes or mussels in a rich tomato broth.
Primordia – 2014 Sparkling Wine
A classic blend of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier made using the traditional method. The wine has a persistent lively mousse, with fresh baked brioche and fresh apricots on the nose. Summer fruit on the palate, with green apples and a hint of citrus. Balanced acidity with a long, refreshing fruit finish. An exquisitely English sparkler and true expression of the Sussex countryside.
A perfect accompaniment to fresh native oysters or smoked salmon on crostini.
