Surrey Soundscapes, is an installation which will be displayed along a 6-mile section of the North Downs Way, between Chantry Woods, Guildford, and ‘The Silent Pool’.  Since last October, writer Neal Cahoon has made regular walks and recordings along this beautiful stretch.

From June to November, seven “listening posts” along the trail will display Neal’s intriguing writings inspired by the location. These wooden boards will link viewers to a website containing the site specific sound tracks that bring those captured sounds collected through different seasons to the forefront of the experience.  From the humming of thousands of wasps on Holmbury Hill to the underwater recordings at Silent Pool, this will present a new way to experience the North Downs Way in the Surrey Hills.

If you would like to hear about the project direct from the artist, Neal will be leading a walk on Sunday 4th June from The Chantries past St Martha’s Church to Newlands Corner returning on an alternative route and he will give a deeper insight into his project. The route is approximately 6 miles long.

Meet us at The Chantries Car Park (Guildford GU4 8AW) at 10.30am for an 11am start. Please dress appropriately for the outdoors, depending on the prevailing weather conditions on the day. The walk will happen in any weather. The walk contains two moderate hills, so a reasonable level of fitness is required.

Booking is essential. For bookings, further details and enquiries, contact us at info@surreyhillssociety.org or on mobile 07530-949302.
