Back by popular request, we are returning to the exclusive County Club, hidden away in Guildford’s High Street, just up from the Guildhall clock. This private members club has kindly agreed to host our dinner this year.
The original County Club building was built by Joseph Pickstone in 1800, and was probably intended as a gentleman’s residence, as domestic properties were a feature of the High Street until the early twentieth century. The County Club was formed in 1882 and began with 120 members in January which had risen to 150 by the end of the year.
Charles Dodgson’s nephew was a member (recorded 1905) which influences the number of Lewis Carroll references around the Club. Records from 1946 report that there were 130 gentlemen members, 106 lady members and 44 wives of members who made use of the Club.
The evening will start with pre-dinner drinks in the bar, over-looking one of the best views in the town, down the cobbled High Street to the Town Bridge and up to The Mount and Pewley Down.
We will then enjoy a Surrey food and drink themed dinner in the intimate dining room. We will have the venue to ourselves, so this is truly an exclusive event for the Society. During the meal you will enjoy some musical entertainment as well as a fun after dinner review from the Chairman, of our first six years as a charity and what we have achieved.
The cost of the ticket includes access to this exclusive venue, pre dinner drink, a three course Surrey themed meal and coffee. Drinks of your choice can be ordered at the bar before or during the meal.
Location: The County Club, 158 High St, Guildford GU1 3HJ
7.00pm for 7.30pm dinner
Dress code: Lounge suit, very smart casual.
Access: The venue can be accessed from the rear by wheelchair or those with mobility issues to avoid the staircase to the first floor. Please make it clear when you are booking if you require access via the rear of the building.
