10:00 am - 1:00 pm
Amongst the pleasures of a walk in the Surrey Hills is that one can revisit a location at varying times of year and experience an ever changing landscape.
For this plant identification walk, we are returning to the Sheepleas above West Horsley in the company of our expert and founder member – Pamela Holt. We have walked parts of the Sheepleas on previous occasions but never in high summer with its profusion of wild flowers.
For this event, we will be walking through varied scenery which will take in beech woodland and open chalk grassland finishing with clay farmland where we will encounter a variety of trees, shrubs, wild flowers and ground cover plants.
Pamela has spent her career working with plants and trees. Her encyclopaedic knowledge always makes these walks an absolute joy with their combination of a rural amble and information about what we are seeing.
We will be meeting in the carpark of the Duke of Wellington pub for a 10am (prompt) departure. At the end of the walk, you are welcome to join us for an optional lunch in the pub at your own expense. We will be asked to select from the menu before we depart for our walk so that catering delays are minimised on our return. A copy of the menu will be sent to you with your booking confirmation.
Since this is a hillside stroll, please wear sensible shoes and either hats / coats or sunscreen to deal with our summer weather. The route will be on footpaths and hillside tracks so is not suitable for those with mobility issues or who struggle on uneven / hilly ground.
The event may be of interest to older children (probably early teens onwards) and well behaved dogs on leads are allowed (not in the pub).
The Surrey Hills Society member’s ticket price for this event is £5. The non-members price is £6.
Booking is essential. To enable everyone to see the small plants being discussed, this event is limited to 20 people. If you would like to join us, please complete and return the attached slip to arrive at Warren Farm Barns before Thursday 4th August 2016.
