Leith Hill Place Dorking Surrey RH5 6LY
From 20th June until the 22nd August, contemporary artist in resident, Louise Scillitoe-Brown will create a rolling programme of experiential spaces in the Drawing Room at Leith Hill Place and run associated all age workshops on 8th July & 4th August, plus other dates to be confirmed. The configurations will evolve over the summer, so visitors can return more than once to experience the art.
Louise’s art practice is inspired by light, colour relationships, geometry and architecture. She is interested in the way society is moving from the physical to the virtual and seeks ways of addressing that in her work. Her work is often built from recycled building materials that hold pockets of physical colour and projected zones of reflected coloured light. www.LouiseSB.com
Her fascination with colour and structure was nurtured whilst under the tutelage of Jonathan Parsons at art school and starting her studies with pupils of Phyllida Barlow as her work was being exhibited by Hauser & Wirth for the first time. An interest in form and fabric is in the blood with a fashion designer mother and paternal grandfather previously head cutter at Aquascutum.
Leith Hill Place has been a source of fascination since it opened to the public in 2013 and Louise has visited many times to photograph the views from the house, the light and the architecture. Over that time she has developed ways of responding to its location, history and most importantly for Louise, the light.
Several experimental installations are planned and as yet the outcomes are not certain. These range from turning the Drawing Room into a large Camera Obscura, to building 8 foot pigment saturated walls within the Drawing Room, dividing the space into zones fizzing with colour. They will also include lensed filters that use the natural daylight to flood rays of colour across the room. Time lapse videos recording the movement of light through the spaces created will be available to view on the ground floor for those unable to reach the first floor Drawing Room.
All age drop in activity sessions will be run on 8th July and 4th August, please check the website (www.nationaltrustorg.uk/leith-hill-place) for details. Louise will be in the house developing ideas on Fridays and some Saturdays during the summer, you are welcome to chat to her about the project. Normal admission charges will apply to Leith Hill Place throughout the installation. Please call the house on 01306 711685 for more information.
