Devil's Punch Bowl

The spectacular location of the Devil’s Punch Bowl is a very popular visitor site.  The National Trust’s ambition here is to offer visitors the very best experience, for as wide a range of people as possible.  Following an access review, in collaboration with the Surrey Coalition of Disabled People, a range of ideas were suggested and co-designed with the Trust.

The funding covered the cost of creating a new, hard-surface path, connecting the visitor facilities with the nearby byway into the countryside beyond, providing an easier route without the need to traverse the car park or road.

Further surfacing work to the existing hard-surfaced paths connecting the old A3 all-weather path to the iconic Devil’s Punch Bowl viewpoint and visitor facilities.  This has addressed the erosion of existing paths to create a better surface, gradient and camber, allowing for access by pushed or self-propelled chairs (wheelchair or pushchairs).

The old café doors were replaced with automatic doors both external and internal to make access into the building much easier.

Finally, the fund has allowed the National Trust to purchase a new Mountain Trike wheelchair which in future will provide inclusive access as it has the ability to easily be pushed over a wide variety of terrain.  A ‘site safe’, to store the trike, was also funded. This is now available to use.
