People of all ages and fitness can participate in four different running and walking challenges. The Greensand Way will form the backdrop to the event where the super fit can face the ultimate challenge with ‘The Ultra’, a 60km run, ‘The Half’, no ordinary walk (or run) in the park of 21km, ‘The Ten’, a fast and furious 10km or ‘The Five’, a family challenge 5km event.
All four routes encompass some of the most picturesque views across the Surrey Hills along the Greensand Way and are designed to test participant’s stamina and strength.
The family events of ‘The Five’ and ‘The Ten’ will take place at Hurtwood; a well-known area for walkers and runners. Starting at 10:00, ‘The Five’ is a 5km course which covers wide open tracks onto footpaths and woodland trails through the peaceful and heather covered landscape. ‘The Ten’ is two laps of the 5km course and for families, walkers and runners to challenge themselves just that little bit more.
The Ultra and Half participants will join the 5km loop, creating a supportive and fun atmosphere as all four events descend onto Hurtwood.
Competitive routes for the fittest walkers and runners are The Ultra, 60km starting at 06:00, and The Half, 21km starting at 09:00. The Ultra route starts in the picturesque town of Haslemere and follows the Greensand Way which originates in the heart of Haslemere and weaves out of town towards the infamous Devil’s Punch Bowl, a large natural amphitheatre. Participants will scale Gibbet Hill, Wormley Hill, Hydon’s Ball, Hascombe Hill, Pitch Hill, Holmbury Hill, Leith Hill and finally Bury Hill. Each one of these hills gives a unique and varied view of the Surrey Hills.
The 60km Ultra is not for the feint hearted with the total climb of the route being the equivalent of climbing Mt. Snowdon in Wales, the highest point in the British Isles outside of the Scottish Highlands.
The Half joins the Ultra at the Duke of Kent School with their first challenge coming in the form of scaling Holmbury Hill. From here they head towards Leith Hill, the highest point along the Greensand Way at 954ft, with impressive views to back this up. Both the Ultra and the Half are mainly on footpaths and bridle paths with only the occasional road sections or crossings making the course free flowing, leaving you with a sense of adventure and achievement. Dorking marks the finish line for those taking on the Half and the Ultra.
As well as support from our dedicated Events Team before and during the event, participants will also receive a medal, chip timing, aid stations, professional first aid cover, car parking, WCfacilities and sports massage.
The event is to raise funds for the Community Foundation for Surrey and the Surrey Hills Trust Fund. Fundraising isn’t compulsory but participants are encouraged to take up the additional challenge to fundraise and support local communities. A suggest fundraising target to aim for is £250 per person.
Half the money raised will support the Community Foundation for Surrey and the other half will help to conserve the unique Surrey Hills countryside.
The Community Foundation for Surrey, an independent charitable trust established to inspire local giving for local need.
