Box Hill has been a popular visitor destination since Victorian times especially with the advent of the railway in 1849 which made it easily accessible for large numbers of Londoners. The road that winds its way up Box Hill is called the Zig Zag. Just a chalk track until the 1920's when it was constructed into a tarmac road due to the increasing popularity of the motor car. Today the Zig Zag is the most popular way of accessing Box Hill by car or bus.
