Arthur Conan Doyle built Undershaw on the heights of Hindhead in the hope that its location would help to improve the health of his first wife, who suffered from Tuberculosis. Sadly she died from the disease in 1906, but the famous author always maintained that the clean air of ‘the English Switzerland’ had considerably prolonged her life.
