Quercus robur, the English Oak tree, is well known as the ‘King’ of British trees because it is so sturdy and durable. Its timber has been used for centuries as a construction material and by the time of Elizabeth I, felling of oak trees had become so extensive that laws had to be passed to protect the tree! One of the oldest oak trees can be found in the village of Tilford; it was planted in 1630!
