J is for Juniper Hall

Originally the Royal Oak coaching inn, Juniper Hall was enlarged and remodelled by Sir Cecil Bishopp in the 1750s, with a classical portico and tall arched windows with delicate plasterwork inside. In 1752 it became a home for refugees from France’s reign of terror including Mme de Stael and Tallyrand. Here Fanny Burney took French lessons from General D’Arblay and later married him at Mickleham Church. Today Juniper Hall is owned by the Field Studies Council.
