E is for Evelyn, John

Diarist and founder member of the Royal society and writer on the landscape. He grew up in the 17th century on the Wotton estate. He described the slopes above the Tillingbourne with affection. “It was sweetly environ’d with those delicious and venerable woods, as in the judgement of strangers as of Englishmen, it may be compared to one of the most tempting and pleasant seates in the Nation”
