State of the Surrey Hills Report

Designated in 1958 for its landscape qualities and also its proximity to London, the Surrey Hills AONB exists to ensure that the landscape is protected for both current and future generations to enjoy. To fulfil this, the AONB management plan, first published in 2004, identifies the key drivers in landscape management, from farming through to recreation. It then sets management policies for those drivers, designed to ensure sustainable management with the AONB character in mind.

The aim of this report is to assess the state of the Surrey Hills in regard to those management policies. Where possible, reference has been made to historic and well as current character features, which has proven especially important in understanding the evolution of the landscape, mainly as a result of human influences. Hopefully, this data will provide an idea of the condition of the Surrey Hills, and provide a starting point for future condition analysis.
