Welcome to Hindhead Together's website!

The £371 million A3 Hindhead Tunnel was opened by Transport Secretary Philip Hammond on 27th July 2011 - heralding the start of vastly improved journeys on the main route between London and Portsmouth.

The 1.2 mile tunnel – the longest of its type in the UK – is part of a four-mile bypass of the Surrey village of Hindhead. It will benefit road users and the local community by reducing traffic at the notorious bottleneck in Hindhead and restoring peace and tranquility to a highly valued part of the Surrey Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty by diverting the A3 away from the Devil's Punchbowl, an internationally protected site.

The project has won awards for its innovation and its safety record, and has been delivered within budget and on schedule.

As reported in meetings during 2010, the project funding for Hindhead Together's project coordinator suffered following the Comprehensive Spending Review.  The full time post of coordinator has been removed and the Joint Advisory Committee will continue to meet until the beginning of 2012 with a skeleton administration to monitor the work of the individual agencies with statutory duties to delvier with regards to the Tunnel and corresponding construction works.

The agencies will work to ensure that the principles of Hindhead Together are upheld and this crucial time for the project is well spent.
